Email Update, October 2020

November 11, 2020 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every 2-3 months we send out email updates. Our latest update from October 2020 is now available. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

We hope that you are healthy and safe, wherever you are. We are doing well in west Wales, and excited to be able to connect you with the work in Tanzania, that we continue to support day by day. While the past few months have obviously been unusual and had unique challenges, we are grateful that the work of Bible translation continues to move forward, and that we are able to keep in touch with our colleagues in Tanzania and around the world via the internet each day.

Working Remotely
We had already been working remotely from the UK since early this year, so we have continued doing this with the COVID-19 restrictions in place. Mark is able to communicate regularly with our colleagues in the five Tanzania offices and others in different countries around the world, which generally works well. The main challenge is that at present it is not easy to make trips to Tanzania every two or three months as he had planned, due to the difficulties of international travel, quarantines, etc.

It has been a strange three months since our last update! We hope you are safe and healthy, and that you have been able to adjust to whatever situation you are in at the moment.

With challenges also come opportunities. While COVID-19 has led to some major changes in the offices Mark oversees in Tanzania, we have seen God using this situation to bring about positive outcomes. The past three months have been very difficult for most of our staff, but we thank God for their patience and perseverance, and also for their creativity in adapting to the new environment.

Here are some highlights…

Email Update, August 2019

March 26, 2020 in Uncategorized, Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from August 2019 is now available, with news of our international staff retreat, and various other travel that we have been doing. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

Greetings from Mbeya airport in Tanzania, where we are waiting to head back home to Dar es Salaam, after a couple of days meeting with the Mbeya team. There are many challenges and uncertainties as we look ahead, but it is a privilege to be working alongside a great team of people from around the world, and we have been reminded of that here in Mbeya this week.

We appreciate you being on this journey with us. Here are some reflections on the last few months, and things we would like continued prayer for…

Nyakyusa New Testament Launch

On May 11th we were privileged to be part of the launch of the Nyakyusa New Testament in the town of Kyela in southwest Tanzania. Together with the print New Testament, an audio version (online, on phones and SD cards) and a smartphone app were launched at the same time, and the JESUS Film is also available in Nyakyusa. The Nyakyusa are one of the larger communities we work with, numbering around 800,000, so we are hopeful that the work of the last 10-15 years will bear much fruit throughout the churches and community.

The day itself was rainy, and some people were prevented from attending because of flooding, but those who were able to come together enjoyed the singing and dancing, and the dedication of the books. There is a desire among the churches to continue translating the Old Testament, but we are hoping that this will mainly be driven by the community, with a more limited role for our staff.
