Email Update, January 2018

January 5, 2019 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from January 2018 is now available, with news of our travel to the US, strategy meetings in Tanzania, and looking ahead to the next few months. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

As we look back over the last year and ahead to 2018, we are thankful for your support for us and for language communities throughout Tanzania and Uganda. As we visit the various offices and projects that we serve, we are always excited to see the progress that our colleagues are making, and the impact that their work is having throughout the communities.

Travel to the US

In September we flew to Oregon, where Mark participated in meetings about the role of linguistics throughout our organisation, and how to best make use of the linguistic resources that are available across the world. Linguistics is an important foundation for most translation projects, as communities work with linguists to devise an alphabet and writing system that is intuitive to read and write.

After this, we spent a couple of weeks visiting family, friends and supporters in Oregon and California. We really enjoyed this opportunity to catch up with people, and to share a bit about the work that is happening in Tanzania and Uganda.

Strategy Meetings

After returning to Tanzania in mid-October, we traveled to Mbeya and Mara to meet with the teams there. Laura was able to meet individually with all the international staff (a total of 37 people!), while Mark helped the teams think through their plans, budgets, and any HR issues that needed addressing.

At the end of November, we invited twenty staff in key positions across Uganda and Tanzania to participate in a week-long meeting in Dar es Salaam to think through our strategic priorities over the next five or so years. It was the first time in over five years that we had had the opportunity to have this kind of group together in the same location, so we appreciated having the chance to discuss various issues as a group.

Some of the strategic initiatives that we discussed were aimed at increasing the capacity of our staff to respond to the needs and requests of the communities, while others involved how we are structured as an organisation, and how we can best partner with churches, government agencies and other NGOs. Email Update, September 2017

January 5, 2019 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from September 2017 is now available, with news of the Burunge New Testament celebration! If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

Thank you for your continued support for us over the last few weeks. We have been busy since we returned to Tanzania in June with lots of travel and a New Testament celebration, and are currently packing for a brief trip to the US for some meetings, and a chance to catch up with friends and family.

Burunge New Testament Celebration

On August 23rd, Mark had the privilege of being part of the celebration of the publication of the New Testament in the Burunge language – the culmination of many years of hard work for the team in the Dodoma office.

The celebration took place in the village of Goima, with several hundred Burunge present, along with special guests from the government, partner organisations, and others representing funders and donors from overseas. Choirs sang and danced, the Scriptures were brought in in boxes and prayed over, and pastors and others read from the New Testament and preached in Burunge.

The overwhelming feeling of the day was that the Burunge are proud to now have the New Testament available in their language. For the community, it is a testimony to the fact that God knows and loves them, that he sees them and he speaks their language. Our prayer is that the Scriptures will be well used in the lives of individuals and churches, and that God will speak to people through them. Read the rest of this entry →

Email Update, June 2017

January 5, 2019 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from June 2017 is now available, with news of our working from a distance and return to Tanzania. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

Thank you for your prayers and support for us as we continue to serve language communities in Tanzania and Uganda. This morning we arrived back in Tanzania after six months mainly based in the UK. Here’s a quick update on the past few months, and what we are looking ahead to…

Travel to Tanzania and Thailand

In March Mark traveled again back to Tanzania, to meet with staff in the Dodoma and Mbeya offices. The purpose of this trip was to discuss plans and budgets for the next year or so. We’re grateful that the meetings generally went well, although Mark would appreciate continued prayer for wisdom as a lot of decisions still need to be made, particularly regarding the Dodoma plans, in the coming weeks.

Towards the end of this trip, Mark had the opportunity to attend the wedding of our good friend, Jackson, as he married Pendo in Dar es Salaam!

From there Mark traveled on to Thailand, where he participated in a week of meetings focused on Multilingualism, Urbanisation and Scripture Engagement. This was a time of thinking together with consultants and other experts from around the world, about how we can best serve churches and communities in a world where many people speak multiple languages, and there is significant migration towards cities. These are obviously big topics that we need to be reflecting on, as these themes continue to shape communities around the globe.

Working from a distance

In the UK we continued with our regular work from Tanzania – Mark managing the various language projects and Laura supporting our international colleagues – mainly via email and skype. We have been grateful for the ability to do this, and for the patience of our colleagues as we have not been able to meet with them face to face as much as we might normally do!

As well as working, we made the most of some beautiful weather, exploring the many country footpaths around where we were living! Read the rest of this entry →

Email Update, March 2017

January 5, 2019 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from March 2017 is now available, with news of our time in the UK and Marks’ trip back to Tanzania. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

Thanks for your prayers and support for us, as we continue to support Bible translation. As we mentioned last time, we traveled to the UK in mid-December, and a lot has happened in the last three months!

Laura’s health

Our reason for spending a few months in the UK has been to investigate some pain that Laura has been having. The pain has been there for over ten years, but the last few months it has been worse than normal, so we are hoping that it can be diagnosed.

At the moment we are still waiting to see a specialist, but in the meantime we have also been experimenting with some dietary changes, to see what might help.

Working from a distance

While in the UK we are both continuing to do our jobs online. Laura still talks with many colleagues as they think through various challenges in their life and work. She is also continuing to provide child safety training, and to respond to any emergency situations as they arise.

Mark is also keeping in daily contact with our colleagues throughout Tanzania and Uganda, as he manages the various projects and provides direction to the language work happening in both countries.

We have very much enjoyed seeing friends and family in the UK, and spending Christmas with Mark’s family. We also had the opportunity to attend Mark’s grandfather’s funeral, who died in January at the age of 97 years and 365 days!

Email Update, December 2016

January 29, 2017 in Wycliffe, Africa, Bible translation, Front, Tanzania by Mark

Every few weeks we send out newsletters or email updates. Our latest update from December 2016 is now available, with news of our travel to the project locations around Tanzania, and a trip to the UK. If you would like to sign up to receive these regularly, you can do so here.

Thank you for continuing to support Bible translation and language development throughout Tanzania and Uganda. Here is a brief update on the last few months, together with some plans as we look ahead…

Tanzania Translation Forum

At the end of September we were glad to have the opportunity to gather together all of the staff directly involved in Scripture translation – translators, advisers and consultants – from all around Tanzania for a 3-day forum in Dodoma. This was the first time in three years that we had had all the translation staff gathered in one place.

The 70 participants had over 400 years of translation experience between them, working in over 30 different languages!

You can read the whole update for more information. Thank you for praying for us! Read the rest of this entry →
